Arabesque

Last night, I attended a concert performed by Iraq’s Maqam singer, Farida. The concert was part of Arabesque Festival: Arts of the Arab World which is organized by the John F. Kennedy Center from February 23 to March 15, 2009.

The below video was taken by my friend Omar.

Nice post. She has a great voice. Not understanding the language she was singing in, I have a question. There were several times that the group broke out in jovial laughter. Was that is reaction to the words she was singing or to her starting to dance with her arms? What were they reacting to?

Heretical Jew,

There is a line in the song where she sings, "I asked the pretty woman." She changed it into "I asked the Iraqi woman, or the Kuwaiti woman, or the Mauritanian woman and then the loudest was when she said "I asked the American woman and the Washingtonian woman"

Each one of those woman were basically meant to be pretty women.

I hope this makes sense.

That's so cool! Do you know if she's coming to Toronto anytime soon?

I'm not sure if she is going to Canada! You can check out her Web site and see if there is a calendar!

Well, she was narrating a love story throughout this song. It was basically a man is asking the woman to give him water because he's thirsty... of course it's a kind of metaphor in which it means he's in love with her. He's thirsty and wants her love to end his thirst.

Thank you so much, IraqiMaqam! I loved your blog as well. I love Maqam Hijazi. Listening to Yousif Omar reminds of my father whom I terribly miss and always brings tears to my eyes. He loves Yousif Omar. Who doesn't?
