Fake Your Sect to Fool Militias

© No Terror. info

Iraqi Sunni youths have started an electronic campaign to protect themselves from Shiite militias. Faking faith to fool death squads is not a new phenomenon. It started after the increased reprisal killings in the aftermath of the al-Qaeda’s terrorists bombed the Holy Shrine in Sammara when Shiites militias stormed houses and streets and kidnapped and killed innocent Sunni people to avenge the bombing. The campaign included an extensive instructional email that contained instructions to Sunni people of how to dissemble themselves like Shiites so that in case they are kidnapped, militias release them believing they are Shiites.

Below is the translation of the email that has been forwarded to many Iraqi youths, including Shiites like myself.

It has been clear to many people that hundreds if not thousands are held hostages and were tortured according to their Sunni identity in different parts of Iraq. We have received confirmed information from people who were released after they were kidnapped “by mistake” because they were Shiites that many of the hostages were interrogated to identify whether they were Sunnis or Shiites. They were killed according to that.

The main questions which you might be asked are as follows:
1- What’s your sect?
2- What’s your surname?
3- Who are the 12 Imams? Count them.
4- Questions about religious ceremonies.

Thus, we advice you to do the following:

1- Practice disguising yourself as another person with a fake ID with a different surname. (Fake IDs are available at Mraidi Market), especially if your name is Omar or Othman or your surname is Dulaimi or Janabi, or your birthplace was in a Sunni majority areas.
2- Memorize the names of 12 [Shiite] Imams as listed at the bottom of the letter and carry a turba [a piece of clay in which Shiite Muslims use during prayers] in your pocket if you can.
3- Learn how to pray like Shiites.
4- Keep more than one turba [a round prayer tablet made from clay gathered in the holy cities] in your house clearly, and put a green or black flags on the roof of your house if needed.
5- In your house, keep a poster of Imam Hussein. You can buy it in Mutanabi Street in Baghdad.
6- Keep a copy of the “al-Sahifa al-Sijjadiya” in your houses, and read some of its moving prayers.
7- Keep a Latmiya in your cell phone.
8- Learn how to curse Yazeed and Mu’awiya and Bani Umaiya [early Sunni caliphs hated by the Shiites]
9- Wear or keep black clothes, especially during ceremonies that require wearing them.
10- Learn the Shiites ceremonies like the deaths of the Imams, their birthdates and the joy of Zahraa.
11- It’s OK to say that you are Sunni who switched to Shiisim.
12- Practice these things well and don’t forget to pray in Husseiniya or a Shiite mosque. All mosques are for God.

Be ware that Sunnis and Shiites are not enemies. Some ignorant who were tempted by evil plans want to spread hatred in Iraq. Remember that the occupation and their allies are the only ones to get benefit out of tearing the Iraqi society that was brotherly united since a thousand years ago.

Remember that your life is in danger. So don’t be careless. Allah is the only protector and He is the most merciful.

Damn, I don't know the 12 Imams, and I'm Shi'i. Also my name is common among Sunni Arabs. It's so sad that Iraqis are being kidnapped randomly and murdered based on their names!

BT, I saw that ad on Al Arabiya yesterday (I posted it on my blog too) and some guy named 'moroccan' on Angry Arab called noterror.info a 'propaganda site'. The jarab just cannot even allow the Iraqis to have their own anti-terror ads without calling it propaganda!

I would be willing to bet that if you asked a group of Iranian young people who the twelve Imams are, many of them wouldn't know them all.

I have heard that if a Muslim converts to a different religion, they may be declared an apostate and subjected to the death penalty. Well, if a Sunni converts to Shiism, is that former Sunni an apostate in the eyes of fellow Sunnis? If a Shiite converts to Sunna, do fellow Shiites then want to kill her/him?

Maybe all Iraqis should just memorize the doctrines of both Sunna and Shia and call themselves Shunnia. Maybe then, they wouldn't need to kill each other.

Thanks to the "democratic" government that always keeps promising us and never carries out any of what it says.

"The jarab just cannot even allow the Iraqis to have their own anti-terror ads without calling it propaganda!"

it's all because of these backwards people that Iraq is suffering. They will never let us live in peace. I hope each one of their terrorists is crushed.

It's funny to see them speaking about propaganda. I wonder if they really know what this word means.

Believe me, many people know about each other's sect.

"Maybe then, they wouldn't need to kill each other."

You mean they wouldn't need to have militias and insurgents killing them."

BT, you are right, of course. I didn't mean to imply that everyone in Iraq is involved in sectarian murders. I suppose that the sort of people who do these murders in the name of their perverted religious beliefs would be murders anyway in some other name if the circumstances were different. These Sunni and Shia extremists are just bad people, plain and simple. Or, in some cases, they might just be very impressionable people who do evil because an evil charismatic leader tells them to, much like the German people blindly followed Hitler straight into the horrible nightmares of WWII. Whatever the reason, thousands of good human beings are being killed every month in Iraq. I wish that something could stop this senseless violence!

I'm glad that people are figuring out ways to aid their survival. If Sunnis have to pretend to be Shiites to live, or visa-a-versa, then I say more power to them all!

BT, its terrible to live under such conditions. I think its a very good thing that you left Iraq when you did. Frankly I don't see much practical difference between radical Sunni and Shia doctrines. People need to calm down.

I have just watched the videos and read your writing. They are all grisly and I am so sorry.

All these events are out of Islam.
This is a sedition in order to break down both Iraq and Iraqi people.
I hope all these events will finish as soon as possible by help of Allah,
otherwise this secterian battle will be the end of Iraq.

What is a Sunni did all that? He or she will be taken for a Shiite, I think?
But then if he/she were aught by Sunni insurgents, they'd kill them.

Let'snot forget that the shiites are being killed by the Sunnis too.
Instead of sending this email to each other, I think the Sunnis and Shiite should go to the streets and KILL every suspect in this war. Even if they were only suspects.
Now, I know some will be very "human rights"-driven and be all ethical on me, but we all know that it's not going to end unless we do that.

Is this one of your 24 steps to liberty? What if you were a "suspect" or your family, would it then be a good idea to just shoot them on the spot?

I am sorry but this is the most ridiculous idea I have heard thus far! By the way, liberty and killing suspects are not conducive with each other!

Even completely normal people can be drawn into cults, gangs or mobs. Bad behaviour is contagious, and so there is a positive feedback effect.

David said...

Don Cox,
I agree with what you said about normal people being drawn into bad behavior. A big part of how the Nazis co-opted the normality out of many Germans was their use of propaganda. The "enemies" of the regime were de-humanized by the Nazi propaganda machine. It is much easier for one person to kill another if the other is seen as non-human or sub-human. Even the U.S. government used de-humanizing propaganda during WWII, especially against the Japanese. If you look at drawings of Japanese soldiers during the war, or at the words used to describe them, it is all aimed at convincing "normal" American boys that it is ok to exterminate Japs. I believe that America did what it had to do during WWII. The regimes in Germany and Japan were truly evil. I'm just saying that in some ways, American propaganda was just as bad as that of Germany and Japan. Now back to Iraq, I wonder what sort of de-humanizing propaganda is being fed to young militia men, or young Al Qaeda suicide bombers?

All countries propagandize during
war ... war is brutal some of the most brutal combat in History
occured between Americans and Japaneese on the islands.
And now thousands of Americans happily work for Toyota in automotive plants in US.

Lets hope Iraqi sects can unify more quickly ....

Bush states publically all the time if violence decreases then US forces come home ... so sects
need only decrease the violence ...
better still end it all together
and then see if Bush lied about
it ... try it for once ...
I'd like to see six full months
without any Iraqi being killed !!!

All in all this is not a bad
email except for the perpetual
lie about how the coalition benefits from sectarian strife in Iraq. if there were no sectarian
strife in Iraq US Forces would be down to 10,000 by now ...
being used to build new Iraqi airforce and tank divisions and
manning new anti-aircraft installations to secure Iraqi airspace.

Two main factions benefit from
violence in Iraq

1) al-queda
2) iran

With a minor player being Syria
as it build Syrias prescence on the world stage more and takes
the focus of of their effort
to dominate Lebanon.

Its idiotic to think 1000 Americans
dead every year and 150 Billion dollars spent every year benefits
the US and Britain

Lets see
150 Billion dollars with oil at
50/barrel thats what 3 Billion
Barrels of oil per year or
approx 60 million Barrels of oil
per week or approx 9 million Barrels of Iraqi oil per day
they US is now stealing just to break even !!!
Except for the fact that Iraq is only producing 2 million barrels per day .... Oh wait US and Brits
are stealing 9 million Barrels per day and we let iraq have 2 million per day ... NOW I UNDERSTAND !!!

Religious and Political leaders of Iraq need to keep making a unified stand against the sectarian violence ... more public
apearences may help ... in addition
much more searches and sweeps are necessary as long as there is humane prison space available and people can be screened and let go say in a week ... the killers are out there and more has to be done.

Well Bremmer was the 13 Imam

Allah has plunged Iraq
into this crisis

Dear B.T
very good subject.
Militias of both sects are doing so and people are confused what to say.
When someone faces a gang of armed guys he should expect their sector first or he might be killed.
If you go on the high way between Baghdad and Amman, you have to prove that you're sunni; the same thing when you go to the south or north of Baghdad, on the contrary inside Baghdad or in Basra you have to prove you're shiite.
Many guys are holding two I.D nowadays, especially those whose names are frank sunnis or shiits like ; Omar and Haider.

Allah kereem

I agree that they should KILL, but not every suspect. They should kill anyone proved to have abused or tortured people. let's keep the "democracy" and "justice" aside when dealing with these criminals.

"Religious and Political leaders of Iraq need to keep making a unified stand against the sectarian violence ... more public

A new tyrant with metal teeth crushing them and every criminal they support may help, not the "more public appearances."

"much more searches and sweeps are necessary as long as there is humane prison space available and people can be screened and let go say in a week .."

Oh we've have had enough searches and surges which ended with nothing positive.

"Well Bremmer was the 13 Imam

Bremer was a filthy mercenary who worked for the sake of money and fame and maybe a bigger position. He is a person that should be despised by Americans just like how Iraqis despise him.

I suspect someone has deliberately driven the wedge between the Iraqi Shia and Sunnis. Machivellian tactics have been at work in Iraq.

Iraqis have only one chance to survive as a nation, unite or fade into the night as a nation.
THe old adage says it all..."United we stand, divided we fall."
